OR Tambo International AirportOR Tambo International Airport

Welcome to Johannesburg! Most of you will arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), South Africa’s largest and busiest airport, located about 25 km (15 miles) from the city center. Here’s what you need to know: 1. Transportation Options Rent a Car: Renting a car is a great way to explore Johannesburg and nearby attractions. Major car rental companies like Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Hertz have desks at the airport. Booking in advance will help you secure better rates. Tip: South Africa drives on the left-hand side of the road. Ride-Sharing Services: Services like Uber and Bolt are widely used and reliable for airport pickups and transportation around the city. Airport Shuttles: Many hotels and guesthouses provide airport shuttle services. Check with your accommodation to confirm availability. Gautrain: The Gautrain is a convenient, high-speed train connecting O.R. Tambo Airport to Johannesburg’s city center, Sandton, and Pretoria. It's perfect for avoiding traffic and is popular with both locals and tourists. Taxis: Metered taxis are available at the airport but can be more expensive than ride-sharing options or the Gautrain. 2. Currency Exchange Exchange Currency: Currency exchange kiosks and ATMs are available in the arrivals hall. South Africa uses the South African Rand (ZAR). Tip: Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s always helpful to carry some cash for smaller purchases or tips.
