Shawn and Angie met running track collegiately for their respective schools. Shawn attended Glenville State University and Angie attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. Both Glenville and Wesleyan compete in the same athletic conference, so Shawn and Angie would see each other often at track meets. After track conference their junior year (2019), Shawn decided to engage in Gen-Z activity by "sliding," into Angie's DMs on Instagram and they began talking. The summer of 2019, Shawn and Angie grew extremely close to one another, facetiming daily and texting all day. In February of 2020, Shawn finally decided to ask Angie to be his girlfriend, a few weeks before the world shut down due to the pandemic. Shawn and Angie spent a good chuck of their relationship doing long distance. Shawn was finishing his collegiate track career at Glenville, while Angie was obtaining her master’s degree at Marshall University. Then Shawn decided to pursue a master’s degree at Otterbein University, in Columbus, OH, while coaching for the schools’ track team. After getting his master’s degree, Shawn relocated back to West Virginia to coach at the University of Charleston. It was then he knew that now was the time to propose to Angie. Shawn and Angie got engaged on September 14, 2024, privately in Angie's apartment. They later celebrated that day with family and friends.
