How we met

Like many modern love stories, ours started on Hinge. Angelo swiped on one of Kiana’s pictures and left a comment so cute she couldn’t ignore it. A few messages later, Kiana never one to waste time finally said, “So… are you going to ask for my number or what?” His first text? “Hey, it’s the man of your dreams.” And honestly… the confidence was so smooth she had to laugh. Later that night, they FaceTimed for four hours straight. Four hours. At that point, it was already obvious neither of them wanted the conversation to end. Not long after, Angelo planned their first date at Pallete 22 in Arlington for happy hour. They talked for hours there too, then kept talking as he walked her back to her car afterward. Kiana still remembers him hugging her goodbye like he didn’t really want to let go. From the very beginning, there was something different about the way they connected. Neither of them expected things to unfold the way they did, but getting to know each other felt easy, exciting, and natural. Angelo had a way of asking thoughtful questions, staying genuinely curious about Kiana, and somehow turning everyday conversation into something she looked forward to constantly. She remembers thinking very early on: I could listen to this man talk forever. Now, Angelo will gladly tell anyone that Kiana “friend-zoned” him in the beginning and honestly, he’s not completely wrong. But what they were building underneath all the flirting was something deeper: a friendship, a foundation, and a connection neither of them could really walk away from no matter how hard they tried. And trust us… they tried. They were both strong-minded, independent, and came into the relationship with different communication styles and life experiences. Before they were officially together, they “broke up” more times than either of them can count. But somehow, they always found their way back to each other. Every hard conversation only made them understand each other more. They were learning how to love each other before they even realized that’s what they were doing. At one point, Angelo finally told Kiana, “You can’t be one foot in and one foot out. It’s either two feet in or two feet out.” So naturally… she came back one last time. But this time, she came with an apology, honesty, and one very important realization: she was ready to be his girlfriend. On November 11, 2023, they officially became “us.” And ever since then, life has felt a little sweeter. Very early on, Kiana met Angelo’s daughters, who immediately decided she was going to be their stepmom someday. (Turns out, kids really do know everything.) Watching Angelo as a father only made Kiana love him more. He is hands-on, intentional, loving, and fully present for his girls and the way he loves his family says everything about the kind of man he is. Today, their relationship is built on faith, friendship, family, laughter, and choosing each other every single day. They go to church together, raise the girls together, tackle DIY home projects together, work out in their home gym together, and take spontaneous trips whenever they can. Angelo surprises Kiana with flowers, affirmation cards, and thoughtful little gifts “just because,” and Kiana shares her food with him which, if you know her, may actually be the greatest proof of love in this entire story. At the center of all of it, though, is the simplest truth: They’re best friends. The kind who can laugh for hours, sit in silence comfortably, dream together, grow together, and make even ordinary days feel special. And deep down, they both knew very early on that this was always going to be forever.

The proposal

By the time Christmas 2025 rolled around, Kiana had become a full-time proposal investigator. To be fair, Angelo made it difficult not to be suspicious. He loves surprises, but he also has a habit of hinting at things. So while he kept telling her, “Relax, I’m planning something,” Kiana spent most of the year trying to figure out exactly when “something” was going to happen. There were definitely a few false alarms. For her birthday, Angelo took Kiana to Jamaica and planned an entire romantic dinner on the beach with candles, beautiful décor, and a giant “I Love You” sign. Naturally, Kiana was convinced this was the moment. It was not. Somehow, Angelo made it through the entire dinner acting completely normal while Kiana internally prepared for a proposal that never came. After that, she stopped trying to figure it out and decided to let herself be surprised whenever the moment finally came. Then, a few weeks before Christmas, life unexpectedly shifted. Angelo began experiencing severe chest pains that eventually led to multiple hospital visits, a medical transport, and major open-heart surgery after doctors discovered one of the stents in his main artery had closed. For nearly three weeks, Kiana barely left his side. Through one of the hardest moments of their relationship, they leaned into each other completely. Kiana held down everything at home while supporting Angelo through surgery and a six month recovery process. Together, they experienced a deeper kind of partnership than either of them could have anticipated so early in life together. In many ways, they were already living out the “in sickness and in health” part of their vows long before even saying them. What Kiana didn’t know was that none of it changed Angelo’s plan. Christmas Day arrived, and for the first time, they were hosting both sides of their families together in the home they had built. Gifts were opened, dinner was shared, games were played, and only a small handful of people knew what was about to happen Kiana’s mom and brother, Angelo’s siblings and mom, and of course the girls. At one point, Kiana went upstairs to talk with her brother’s girlfriend for a bit. When she came back downstairs, every light in the house was already off. Then she noticed everyone standing there holding up their phones with the flashlights on. Kiana turned toward the living room and saw their 9-foot Christmas tree glowing beside candles, rose petals, and Angelo down on one knee while Musiq Soulchild played in the background. Surrounded by both of their families and with many of them equally shocked (but not really) and emotional themselves, Angelo asked her to marry him. And it was the easiest yes of her life. It was romantic, emotional, intimate, joyful, and perfectly them; celebrating not just the beginning of forever, but everything they had already walked through together to get there.
