History of the Ancient Spanish Monastery Construction of the Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux began in 1133 AD near Segovia, Spain, and was completed in 1141. Originally named the Monastery of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels, it was renamed after Bernard of Clairvaux was canonized in 1174. A Cistercian monk and influential church leader, Bernard founded the Abbey of Clairvaux. Monks lived there for nearly 700 years until a social revolution in the 1830s led to the cloisters being seized. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst purchased the cloisters and shipped them to the United States in over 11,000 crates. Financial troubles left them stored in Brooklyn for 26 years. In 1953, the Monastery was reassembled and called “the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history” by Time. In 1964, Colonel Robert Pentland, Jr. gifted the cloisters to the Bishop of Florida. Today, St. Bernard de Clairvaux is an active Episcopal parish offering services in English and Spanish and welcoming visitors year-round.
