Question

Why the Willard?

Answer

We loved the Willard at first sight. The beautiful bones matched with the rich DC history that we love (Andy is living his dream of being Jed Bartlett in The West Wing!) made it the perfect place for us to get married. Some highlights of its history include... - The Willard popularized the term lobbyist - Ulysses S. Grant frequently visited The Willard during his presidency to enjoy a cigar and a glass of brandy in the hotel’s lobby. Often bothered by self-promoters during his visit, he referred to these individuals as “lobbyists”, leading to the popularization of the term. - Nicknamed the “Residence of Presidents”, The Willard has welcomed almost every U.S. president since 1853. - Abraham Lincoln took up lodging on the 2nd floor of The Willard ten days prior to his inauguration in 1861. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sat in the lobby of The Willard with his closest advisors to make final edits to his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, just hours before delivering it on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
