It was a Friday in January 2019, a few weeks before Andy would deploy overseas. Malia and Andy had been trying to check things off his list of things he wanted to do before he left. One of the things at the top of his list was to hike through one of the parks they'd been to once before. Malia was working from home that day and happened to be in a terrible mood. She kept checking the clock and was getting more irritated as the day went on. It gets dark early in January and Andy was running late. She had made up her mind; she was not going on that hike. Shortly after, Andy walks in the door and asks if she is ready to go. Begrudgingly, she went to put on more layers. For the entirety of the short drive, Malia sat there just thinking about how she did not want to go. While walking, she told Andy how much her day sucked and how she was sorry she was in a bad mood. They got to the end of the path and sat down on the bench at the peak of a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. While peering at the lake, Andy said, "There's something I've been meaning to talk to you about." All Malia could think was "Oh great, more bad news." When Andy spoke again and asked her to marry him, she was in disbelief. Obviously she said yes or this site wouldn't be here. Next Andy went off the path and came back with a bottle of champagne, two glasses, and a couple of pieces of cheesecake to celebrate. It turned out that he wasn't running late but made a pit stop to hide everything before going home. After chowing down on some cheesecake the two headed back toward the truck, trekking through the woods in the dark. Despite her previous bad mood, Malia was all smiles by the end of the night.
