How We Met

"You're cute, do what you want with this"

Mairi and Andrew both grew up in San Rafael, California, but their paths didn’t cross until years later, when their lives were already on very different tracks. Andrew had settled into his routine, working at the local taproom, while Mairi was busy teaching ballet and working at Lululemon. Though they shared a hometown, it wasn’t until one evening their worlds collided. Mairi had come to the taproom with a few coworkers, looking to unwind after a long day. She’d actually been there a few days before, and it was on that initial visit that she first noticed Andrew—he was the laid-back, friendly server. But on this particular night, something about him seemed even more familiar, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that she recognized him more clearly. He was the same guy from before, and something about him stood out—he was easygoing, focused, and undeniably cute. What Mairi didn’t know was that Andrew had his own plans that night. A group of his friends came in and he had hoped to play matchmaker. There was a cute group of girls at a community table, and he thought it would be fun if one of his friends sparked a conversation. So, he sat them next to the girls, hoping someone would take the bait—but no one did. Despite stealing a few glances Andrew's way, Mairi didn’t make a move. She wasn’t one to push things, but as the evening went on, she couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of boldness. At the end of the night, with a playful grin, she grabbed a napkin and scribbled a note: "You’re cute, do what you want with this." Beneath it, she added her number. It wasn’t anything grand or dramatic—just a small, impulsive gesture. She left the note behind, curious about what might happen, but walked out half-expecting to never hear from him again. To her surprise, the very next day, Andrew texted her. He had seen the note the night before but had no idea who had written it—there had been multiple people at the table, and the check had been split in two, so he couldn't pinpoint the sender. Still, he was intrigued enough to reach out, and Mairi’s response came quickly. As the days passed, the connection between them deepened. They continued texting back and forth, and soon, they made plans to meet in person. Given their busy lives, it took a little time to coordinate, but they finally agreed on the local farmers market, where Andrew worked part-time at a crepe stand. When Mairi arrived at the stand, Andrew was behind the counter, expertly flipping crepes. The moment she walked up, he instantly recognized her. There was something about her smile—effortless and warm—that made her unmistakable. He made her a crepe, told her he’d be over shortly, and when he finished, walked over to join her. That moment felt completely natural, like two old friends picking up where they’d left off. They talked for a while, not wanting the conversation to end, and before long, they made plans to meet again. What had started with a simple note on a napkin quickly grew into something more meaningful. As they spent more time together, they discovered a deep connection that neither of them had expected. And Andrew couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of it all—he had tried to play matchmaker for his friends that night at the taproom, but in the end, it was Mairi who made the first move, and fate had its way. The rest, as they say, is history.
