Dear friends and family, Due to COVID-19, we have decided to cancel our original wedding plans scheduled for May 30th, 2020. The Governor of Virginia has issued a stay-at-home order that is effective through June 10th. After thinking and talking it through, we have resolved to hold a very small gathering of immediate family only in lieu of the larger wedding celebration we had planned. This will be held at a later time, in the interest of protecting all involved and to keep things simple in case we need to reschedule again. We want to thank you all for your good wishes and for making plans to attend. We are extremely disappointed to not be able to see all of you gathered in one place. We have had to make a very tough decision that prioritizes not just our wishes, but the health and safety of all our guests. We would, however, still love to know you all can be involved in some way. To that end, we will be doing a live stream of our little ceremony that you will be able to watch from the safety of your home. This way, our guests and far-away families can still watch us get married. As of now, the date of the live stream is pending. We will send out further information for how to access the stream when we decide how to set it up. Please stay safe and stay hopeful. All our love, Lili and Andrew
Like many modern romances, theirs began online, on OkCupid. Andrew tried unsuccessfully to send Lili a message, which would not get through for a few days until Lili remembered to empty her inbox! It was a very impressive first message and soon they were writing long messages to one another. Though they lived almost two hours away from one another, they decided to meet after a few weeks. They finally met amidst a backdrop of woods and fallen leaves, and have been together ever since.
When the time came to propose to Lili, Andrew had a plan. Lili knew he’d bought the ring, so she was watching out for a possible proposal. As for Andrew, his love of practical jokes combined with Lili's love of Christmas gave him an idea: he would propose on Christmas morning, but he wanted it to be a surprise. Thus began his disinformation campaign to throw her off the trail. First, Andrew put the ring, in its velvet box, into another box. And put that in another, and that inside of an empty shoe box. He wrapped it up and put it with the other Christmas presents, and when Lili asked him what it was, replied with something new each time. “It’s a blender.” “A puppy.” “Your ring.” “An inflatable bouncy castle.” (To this last, she commented that the box seemed too small, to which the reply was, “Well, it’s inflatable.”) He had previously kept the ring inside an ammo can to keep it safe, and as they left New Hampshire to spend the holidays with Lili's parents in Virginia, he commented, “Oh dang, I forgot the ammo can.” Lili, a smart one, asked if he should go back and get it. She assumed the ring was still within, so when he said, “No, I won’t need it,” she did an admirable job of hiding her disappointment. Fast forward to Christmas day. They had opened nearly all the presents, but he had been holding her ring box for last. Lili opened it, found a box within, and shot him a look, equal parts exasperation and grudging approval of the box-within-the-box. With each successive box, the exasperation grew, and as she came to the final, velvet box, Andrew knelt down on a knee. She looked at him as she opened it, and he asked, “Lili, will you marry me?” He considers it a point of pride that the first words out of her mouth were, “Are you serious?” Followed quickly, of course, by "YES!"
