Back in spring 2015, Dalice and Andrew ended up next to each other in a cell biology class at Delaware State University. A lab sink sat between them, and honestly, that’s about how close they got at first—just passing papers and maybe a quick smile. Dalice still jokes that Andrew wrecked the class curve (he says there shouldn’t have been one anyway). Months went by with no real connection until Andrew finally worked up the nerve to talk to Dalice about motorcycles. She was a total biker chick, while he was cruising in his 2006 Toyota Camry. He asked her to teach him to ride, thinking, “Oh, I’m in!” Spoiler alert: he wasn’t. They bumped into each other again in a physiology class and sometimes in the halls, but it was just a casual “hey” here and there. By spring 2016, Dalice was graduating, and even Joe Biden, the commencement speaker, seemed to take a shine to her. Andrew, graduating a semester later, thought, “Great, now I’m up against the Vice President?” Dalice moved to Maryland to kick off her career in pharmaceuticals, and Andrew headed to Thomas Jefferson University for med school. They stayed in touch with the occasional birthday or Mother’s Day message on Instagram, with Andrew sneaking in a “you’re gorgeous” now and then—luckily, Dalice didn’t hit the block button. Fast forward to early 2020, when a silly meme about their old cell bio class got them chatting again. As COVID started making headlines, Dalice had to rush back from India on literally the last flight out. After that, they started talking every day. In May, Dalice planned a weekend trip to see Andrew in Philly. Friday came and went with no sign of her, but on Saturday, she showed up.
