Wilson's Creek National Battlefield

About 20 minutes from Springfield. Why Visit: This is the site of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, one of the first major battles of the Civil War in the Western Theater, fought on August 10, 1861. It was a pivotal battle, with Union forces under Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon suffering a defeat to Confederate forces led by Brigadier General Sterling Price. The battlefield is now a National Park, where you can walk the trails, visit the museum, and view several historic markers and monuments that tell the story of the battle. The site also includes the restored Ray House, which was used as a Confederate field hospital during the battle.

Pea Ridge National Military Park

About 2 hours south of Springfield, this park commemorates the 1862 Battle of Pea Ridge, which helped secure Missouri for the Union. Amazing place and humbling. A Nelson favorite!
