It was a Tuesday afternoon at Warren County WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and two representatives from NYSDOH (NY State Dept of Health) came up to the Warren County NY Municipal Building to do a site visit. One was a familiar face, one was not. The clinic was on break for lunch and the two representatives had decided to bring their own lunches and eat in the WIC Office. Jolie Navatka got a late start on her lunch break because she was finishing up some notes on her computer. She also had decided to bring her lunch and saw that some of her coworkers were listening to a story from one of the DOH representatives. Her name was Diane Dattorre. Diane was the DOH representative that had not been on a site visit to Warren County WIC before. But she was a friendly stranger, telling the harrowing tale of how her son fell 25 feet off of Whiteface Mountain. He not only survived to tell the tale, but is able to walk (and hike!) despite breaking both of his legs. It had been some time since Jolie had been in a relationship and she was having trouble putting herself out there again. January 15 was Jolie's coworker, Jignasha Shah's birthday, and Jignasha was trying to encourage Jolie to "get back out there" when it came to dating. Maybe it was because it was Jignasha's birthday or maybe it was because this stranger was so friendly, but what happened next was completely out of character for Jolie. "Is he single?" blurted Jolie. "No, but my younger son is single," replied Diane. "Her younger son? I don't even know how old the older son is!" thought Jolie. Then Jolie replied, "How old is your younger son and does he like to hike?" At the time, Jolie was 24 and a half years old. "He's 30 years old", Diane answered. "I can work with that," thought Jolie. Diane also added that her younger son, Andrew (Cross), "could be coaxed into" hiking. Diane saw the smile on Jolie's face so she showed her a picture of her handsome son and Jolie's eyes lit up. "He's even more handsome in person," teased Diane. Jolie blushed. Diane asked Jolie if she could take a picture of Jolie to send in a text message to Andrew. If he was interested in her picture, maybe Jolie and Andrew would go out on a date. Jolie continued to blush for the rest of the lunch break. "Was it inappropriate to ask a DOH representative who was auditing our local agency office if their son was single? What was I thinking?!?!?!" At the end of lunch, Diane had received two text messages from Andrew. "She's beautiful!" and "Do you have her phone number?" Jolie gave Diane the phone number so Andrew could send Jolie a message. Jolie also asked Diane for Andrew's phone number so if he texted her, she would know who he was. For the rest of the workday, Jolie did not hear from Andrew. Jolie was driving home from work when she heard her phone chime. Could it be? The message read, “Hey Jolie, this is Andrew. How are you?” “Hi, pretty good, how are you?” Jolie typed back. Then she paused and thought, “How is this conversation going to continue? Was that trivial exchange going to be it?” “I’m doing good. So I heard you were asking about me at the clinic today lol. Would you like to meet over coffee sometime?” “Sure, I think I heard you live near Albany?” “Yup, that’s right” “I live just south of Lake George. Would you want to meet in Saratoga? “Yeah that sounds good…”
