Andrew and Olivia first met in August 2022. They had overlapped in the Classics PhD program at Cornell for two years at that point, but online education due to the pandemic and an international fellowship for Andrew had delayed their first meeting. During that time, Andrew remembers noticing Olivia on Zoom calls and Olivia heard tales about Andrew and his passion for Indo-European linguistics, but that was all they knew of each other until a mutual friend hosted a gathering at the beginning of the Fall 2022 semester. Olivia knew everyone in the room except for Andrew, so she walked over to him, extended her hand, and said, “Hi, I’m Olivia. I don’t think we’ve met in person before.” Little did they know where that initial greeting would lead. Over the course of that fall semester, Andrew and Olivia had several long conversations over coffee as well as several serendipitous run-ins around town. Both were surprised to find that they could converse so easily with someone they had just met, and it was not long before they were delving into some of life’s biggest questions together, losing track of time in their mutual quest for understanding. Both had been facing significant life changes and disappointments in 2022, and the humility and vulnerability that these experiences had cultivated in them laid the groundwork for a relationship built on immense trust and respect when they began to date in January 2023. They quickly became confident that marriage was in their future, and after nearly a year of dating and a whirlwind trip to California for Christmas in December 2023, Olivia asked Andrew, “What’s the next step for us?” Andrew replied, “I think we should get engaged this spring and married the year after that. Does that make sense?” Olivia answered with a smile, “Yes, that makes sense.” Andrew asked Olivia to marry him on March 28, 2024, and they look forward to celebrating the beginning of their married life together with family and friends on May 25, 2025.
