How We Met

We first met in choir at Pine Tree High School, singing a duet together during a choir show. At the time, we were both focused on other people and never considered dating. After college, life brought us back to Longview where we reconnected at a mutual friend's wedding in March 2020. From that point, we started spending time together, despite the challenges of Covid. Our first official date was at The Grove in Tyler, where we shared our five-year plans, stories about our families, and enjoyed some good wine. Then, in June 2020, after a day spent on a boat, Trever charmed me by cooking hotdogs over a campfire and making our relationship official. Since then, we've navigated moves between Houston and Longview, started new jobs, and embarked on countless adventures. In spring 2023, Trever's grandparents suggested we purchase a fixer-upper next to their home, and after falling in love with the idea, I couldn't resist. After some planning and deliberation, we decided to make it our own, aiming to move in by December 2023. Fast forward to fall, amidst the chaos of preparing to move, I received an invitation to a friend's baby shower that included spouses. It was hosted next door to our future home, so I excitedly marked December 2nd on my calendar. On the morning of December 2nd, as we packed for our impending move, we realized we'd forgotten a gift—diapers! Trever graciously went on a last-minute Target run, wrapped the diapers in our almost-empty apartment, and even returned for a forgotten bow. Surprisingly, he allowed me ample time to get ready, and we set off early for the shower to walk through our future home and plan furniture placements and a fence. During the drive, Trever insisted on stopping for water at a gas station and then, to my bewilderment, bought an enormous scratch-off ticket. He urged me to scratch it right then and there in the parking lot, despite our time constraints. Ten minutes later, having lost, we resumed our journey. Arriving at the street of the shower, Trever handed me a notepad and suggested I jot down ideas for each room of the house to distract me. As we passed our new home, I suggested we just park and head inside, but Trever stubbornly insisted we map out the backyard fence first. Reluctantly, I agreed, navigating muddy ground until Trever led me to a magnificent 150-year-old tree we both loved. He pointed out something on the tree, and as I moved closer, Trever surprised me with a heartfelt proposal. Confused, thinking we were already late for the neighboring baby shower, I initially protested before joyfully accepting. To my surprise, Trever's stepmom, Devin appeared from around the corner, capturing the entire moment on camera. Following Devin, we circled to the front of the house where Trever had secretly gathered our closest friends and family to celebrate our engagement. What began as a friendship in 2010 blossomed into something more in 2020. Nearly five years later, who would have imagined that a casual conversation about our future over dinner and wine would bring us here? We're overjoyed to begin this journey as husband and wife and can't wait to celebrate with everyone! Here's to becoming the Barker's!
