The "Arribada" of the Sea Turtles (luck pending!)
We are hoping to get lucky to see the ARRIBADA (arrival) of the turtles to nearby Ostional beach! Around once a month, for a period usually 3-4 days in length, usually one week before the new moon, hundreds to thousands of sea turtles make land at a specific one-mile stretch of Ostional Wildlife Refuge, where they come to lay their eggs in the dark volcanic sand. If we are so lucky, we will make a nighttime adventure to the site where the rarely seen biological wonder takes place! The olive ridley sea turtle is one of the only species in the world that synchronizes their nesting in mass emergences we call ARRIBADAS. 10 million turtle eggs can be laid during this single nesting period.
