When Derrick Met Andrea

Her: We met online. Derrick messaged me something equally cute and cheesy. I asked him all of my deal breakers and he passed. I thought, “I have to find out if this guy is the real deal,” so I instantly asked him if he’d want to go on a date with me. Him: I had never been asked on a date before, so I was a bit confused. I was so used to the song and dance of dating in the 2010 era, that this was refreshing to meet a woman who did not fall into the status quo, so I happily obliged. However because I still believed there was chivalry to be had here, I made sure to plan the date at Gamlin Whiskey House. Her: Christine came over before our date to be my sounding board as I was getting ready. I thought I wasn't nervous - until I was pacing and Christine pointed it out. I remember walking into the restaurant and immediately seeing Derrick's smile, which made me smile. We hugged, sat down and I asked what he did that day. Him: This girl was special and I knew it so I spent all day ironing clothes, practicing my smile, getting a hair cut, drowning myself in cologne and obsessively eating mints like they were going to be discontinued. The time finally came. I called an Uber, arrived at the restaurant, and in she comes. She asked me what I did that day and I answered calmly "I got ready" and smiled. Her: "All day?" I asked. "Yeah, how long did it take you to get ready," he asked. "Uh...thirty minutes," I told him laughing. He treated me like a lady. We had an incredibly fancy dinner where he used words like, "floral undertones"; meanwhile, I kept it simple with, "This food is good." Here we were, two people from different sides of the spectrum, yet both nervous-excited for this first date. Little did we know this would be the first date of many.
