We had known of each other for a few months, but we spent this November weekend hanging out with the UNCW gymnastics team. Later that week, Brandon invited me (Heather) to one of the dining halls on our college campus, and I nervously said yes. Brandon was very kind and carried my food as I was on crutches. We ate pizza our first date, and pizza never disappoints! That should've been the first clue that this was something special! Our lunch dates became more frequent, and about 6 months later we decided to make it official :)
We'd been wanting to visit Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden for a while now that we both lived in Charlotte, and Brandon finally made arrangements for us to go. It was a cold and rainy day, but he insisted we still try to go. This should've been a red flag for me - Brandon's the type of person who would have 1) bailed before we even left the house because of the weather forecast or 2) turned around when it started raining. Not only did he do neither of those, but he also contemplated driving around the area to kill time to let the rain pass or to wait until it was darker so the Christmas lights in the garden would be on. I told him it was fine and we were already there - "let's just go in." So, we get into the garden, and there wasn't much to see. No flowers (it was January). Why were we here in the middle of winter? Red flag number two. Thankfully, we ended up in the greenhouse where there were tons of neat plants. We each picked our favorites, and Brandon wanted a picture of me in front of his favorite tree. It was a tree with a bunch of thorns on it, but it leaned a little to the right like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I propped my hands up to make it seem like I was holding the tree up from falling, like a classic Pisa pose. As Brandon captured the shot with his phone, he kept moving toward his right (so that he was more behind me rather than to the side of me). I turned to see what he was doing, and I think I caught him in the midst of trying to be sly (oops lol). He was somewhat kneeling with his hand in his pocket, but I turned away from the camera again and pretended I didn't know what he was up to now. Then, I finally turned back to him one more time, and he was down on one knee with a gorgeous ring in his hand. Even though I suspected something moments before he proposed, it was still a magical moment that we will cherish forever!
Although Charlotte is no longer home to us, we are thrilled to become newlyweds just outside of the Queen City. We're so excited to celebrate this next chapter of our lives with you!
