It’s hard to meet people when you work in TV news, usually you just end up spending most of your time with others that work in the industry. But throw in a pandemic and Sully’s choice to move to Topeka, Kansas for work, this relationship probably didn’t have too high of a likelihood to come together. Thankfully, the internet exits. As Sully started his career in Topeka, Amy was grinding away doing the same in Chico, CA. Strangely enough, Sully had gone to school there, but the future lovebirds had never been there the same time. They had, somehow, both been in Casper, Wyoming during the same time, in fact they were at the same bar at the same night, but never met (Amy was initially very underwhelmed with Sully, she just doesn’t like to admit it). It did not seem as though the two would ever get to meet in person. Sully’s co-worker in Topeka, the one and only Hannah Brandt, had interned with Amy in the Bay Area. Sully had seen Hannah and Amy’s interact on Instagram and constantly asked when Amy would come to visit. Hannah relayed the info and Amy responded by following Sully on social media. Sully, being the shy boy he is, was struggling to think of a line to slide into Amy’s DM’s, it had never been his strength. Thankfully, Amy mustered up the courage and dropped a line on Sully that young women across the world will discuss for generations: “Your tweets are so funny lol” And with that, the rest is history. There was no getting around it, Sully was dragging his feet. There was never a question of how much Sully loved Amy, but he’d never been one to act quickly. Some say it was time to “shit or get off the pot.” With that in mind, Sully referred to the work of his generation’s greatest wordsmith, Lil Wayne, and said, “Dear Mr. Toilet, I'm the shit." Sully devised a plan after coming up with many other bad plans. It was going to happen on the trip back home. Amy’s beloved father, Tom, had invited the two to join the Lanski family on a summer getaway in San Clemente. It was time to lock in for life. Amy has never been one for surprises, so she had a feeling the whole way for a few different reasons (Sully told her). Sully had picked out a beautiful balcony at the rented home to make memories. As Sully and Amy woke up the day it would all go down, Amy whispered to Sully, “It better not be on that damn balcony.” Sully scoffed at that statement (he was panicking). Luckily, Sully’s soon-to-be family had his back. Amy’s wonderful cousin Jenell and her incredibly talented daughter Brooke sprang into action and helped Sully find a new location, some say it was better (everyone), but others still really thought the balcony could work (Sully). As the morning turned into afternoon, Sully put the plan in motion. Sully and Amy took a walk to the new location, a bench overlooking the beach in San Clemente. With Jenell and Brooke hiding near by to document, Sully got down on one knee to express his love. Amy, who was excited, did not hear a word Sully said and screamed “YES” before Sully was even a third of the way through he wanted to say. The words never mattered – both were just happy to start the next chapter of their lives with the person they love most. (Written by Sully Engels)
