We first crossed paths in October 2023 at a Christian retreat for graduate students in New Hampshire. At the time, Amy was working as a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital while pursuing a Master of Public Health part-time at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Phil was a postdoctoral fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital. We were both involved in Christian graduate student groups. Amy was a leader in the Harvard Graduate Christian Fellowship at HSPH, and Phil was a leader of the Harvard Medical School / School of Dental Medicine Christian Student Association (HCSA / Harvard CMDA). While we met briefly at the retreat, it wasn’t until February 2024, when our groups began planning a joint event with dinner and a speaker, that we really started to get to know each other. The event took place on March 1, 2024, and we started dating soon after. We connected through our shared faith, similar backgrounds, and common interests, including biomedical research, reading, watching Hong Kong TV shows, traveling, and volunteering for our churches. Phil is from Hong Kong, and Amy grew up nearby in Macau (ages 2 to 13) before moving to Taiwan. We both speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, and are actively involved in our churches and communities. Our journey is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see where God leads us next, hopefully with lots of laughter, love, and maybe a few more Hong Kong dramas along the way.
RAMEN FIRST DATE Our first date was simple and cozy, over bowls of ramen. It was a relaxed way to start getting to know each other. WATERFIRE IN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND We took a trip to see WaterFire in Providence, where the river is lined with floating bonfires and music fills the air. We explored local shops, tried new foods, and took a boat ride through the firelit canals. It was a beautiful and memorable night. A RETURN TO TOAH NIPI Toah Nipi is the camp where we first met. We returned as part of a winter group retreat, walking through the snow and remembering where it all began. REVERE BEACH AND THE TALL SHIP BOSTON FOR AMY'S BIRTHDAY For Amy’s birthday, we spent the day by the ocean at Revere Beach and visited the Tall Ship Boston to take in the harbor views. It was a relaxing and scenic way to celebrate. CANDLELIGHT CONCERT We went to a live orchestra concert lit entirely by candlelight. The setting was calm and atmospheric, and gave us a unique way to enjoy music together. BOSTON BALLET: ROMEO AND JULIET We saw Romeo and Juliet performed by the Boston Ballet. The dancing and music were unforgettable and made for a truly moving experience. HONG KONG AND MACAU During our trip to Hong Kong, Amy met Phil’s family for the first time and saw where Phil grew up. We also visited Macau, where Amy had lived as a child. It was a meaningful return and a chance to share important parts of our past, take engagement photos, and discover more in common than we expected. HONG KONG DRAMAS We have spent many evenings watching Hong Kong TV shows and movies together, especially laughing at Wong Tze Wah comedies. It has become one of our favorite ways to unwind and connect at the end of the day. BOSTON LIGHTS AT THE FRANKLIN PARK ZOO We visited the Boston Franklin Park Zoo during its autumn light festival and were amazed by the glowing displays and colorful installations. We loved it so much that we went back again. Walking through the sparkling paths together was a peaceful and beautiful way to enjoy the season.
