How They MetHow They Met

Adam and Amy met in Rzeszów, Poland, during a Polish Folk Dance Festival called the World Festival of Polish Folk Ensembles (Światowy Festiwal Polonijnych Zespołów Folklorystycznych). This event brings together Polish folk dance groups from around the world every three years to celebrate and showcase Polish cultural heritage. Amy had traveled to Rzeszów from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with her dance group, “Polanie,” while Adam and his folk group, “Polonia,” had traveled from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Although Amy was familiar with Polonia from previous encounters years ago, she had never met Adam before—he had just joined the group that year. During the week of the festival, Amy and a few friends visited one of the rooms where members of Polonia were staying. It was there that she was briefly introduced to Adam by his roommate. Although their encounter was brief, Amy remembered Adam’s name because it was the same as her father’s. The final night of the festival was a celebration. All the folk groups made the most of their last evening, celebrating after a week of intense practices and performances. While walking outside after losing track of her friends, Amy saw Adam from a distance and called out his name. When he turned around, his confused expression made her laugh. He asked her name, but since he had forgotten it, Amy decided to play along and tease him. This lighthearted moment sparked a conversation that lasted the rest of the evening, until Adam had to leave to catch his bus. Before parting ways, they exchanged contact information and continued to stay in touch after returning to Calgary and Chicago. Soon after, Adam asked if he could visit Amy in Calgary, which helped bring them closer despite the physical distance. Not long after, Amy traveled to Chicago to visit him, and the two eventually decided to make their relationship official and test the waters of a long-distance relationship. However, their commitment was soon tested when the pandemic struck. Border closures between Canada and the United States kept them apart for nine long months. Despite the challenges, they remained hopeful. After submitting the necessary documents to the government, they were granted permission to reunite. The experience only strengthened their bond, and ultimately, they decided that Amy would move to Chicago, putting an end to their long-distance relationship once and for all. Amy and Adam got married on April 2, 2022, and will now be having their ceremony on August 16, 2025
