How They Met

2010: "Can I sit here?"

Emma and Jose met on the first day of High school. It was during their English Class and the teacher had assigned seats based on the student's last names in alphabetical order. As if the universe wanted it to happen, with their last names being Rodriguez and Reyes they were assigned to sit right next to each other. The rest is history. ~THEIR POINT OF VIEW~ Emma: Jose walked into our English class late and asked me if he could sit next to me. I asked him if the name on the name tag was him. He looked a little thrown off on how I asked him and he just replied “yes” and sat down. At the time, I was thinking; “Why on earth would he ask me if he has no other choice?” Jose: I, as the gentleman I am, asked Emma if I could sit next to her. She rudely looked at me as if she didn’t know if I were too dumb to know how to read the tag on the desk with my name on it or if I was too dumb to not know what my name was. She finally asked; “Well, is that your name?” while pointing sarcastically at my name tag. I embarrassingly said “yes” and just sat down.

Their First Kiss

2011: "Is it official?"

Emma and Jose started dating on January 30th, 2011. Emma’s parents and sisters had picked up Jose for some evening fun and had stopped at a McDonald’s for a late night snack. While Emma’s family put their order’s in, Jose took Emma aside and asked “Is it official?”. Emma responded “yes” and had their first kiss. ~THEIR POINT OF VIEW~ Emma: Jose and I were on a date. At that time, Jose and I lived 45 minutes apart and my family joined us to get to know Jose. We went to McDonald’s with my family so they could get a late night snack. Jose pulled me to the side and asked me “Are we official?” I said “yes” and we had our first kiss. When I looked over I saw my dad looking right at us, white as a ghost. I am sure that day he could not sleep. It makes me crack up till this day. Jose: Emma and I were out on a “date” but her whole family had tagged along because I don’t think they trusted me yet. We had stopped at McDonald’s because Emma’s sister, Kiara, wanted chicken nuggets (one out of three things she ate at that time, mozzarella sticks, and cheese pizza being the others) and Paola wanted a McChicken. Emma’s parents shared a Mcflurry. Emma wasn’t hungry and I said I didn’t want anything, because I did not want to be a bother. While everyone was ordering their food I took Emma aside and asked her to be my girlfriend… well not really I asked “Is it official?” she said “Yes.” and we kissed.

She said "Yes!"

2019: "Will You Marry Me?"

Emma and Jose went on vacation to Guatemala in 2019. On the second day, Jose and Emma headed to Dinner at Welten Restaurant, located in Antigua, where Jose had made arrangements to have a private table decorated with rose petals and garnished with cold champagne. Shortly after arriving, Jose got on one knee and asked for Emma’s hand. Emma said “Yes!” and the two celebrated their engagement.

~THEIR POINT OF VIEW~ Emma: Our second day in Guatemala was so much fun but it was exhausting, so we decided to take a nap in the evening. Jose woke me up and told me he had made reservations at a restaurant and that I had 20 minutes to get ready. I quickly got dressed and our friend Clay from Guatemala picked us up and drove us to the restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff was very sweet. Jose asked our waiter to take a picture for us but little did I know he was recording. I expected that he would ask me to marry him soon, but not at that time. Jose asked me “Do you know how much I love you?” and I said “ I love you too” and because I get nervous when others are waiting for me, I looked at the waiter who was holding the camera to take the photo with a huge smile on my face. Jose again regained my attention and said “It’s not a photo, it's a video” and proceeded to get on one knee. But then he got up and got on his other knee because “he was on the wrong one”. That was when he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him, and I nodded yes with tears in my eyes.

Jose: I knew I wanted to ask Emma to marry me in Guatemala but I did not know what day or how I wanted to. I just knew I wanted to do it soon because I was tired of hiding her ring from her and was so nervous of losing it. I was sure it would be much safer on her finger. On the second day while Emma napped, I was looking for restaurants that would decorate a table with roses and champagne at such a late notice and stumbled upon a beautiful restaurant named Welten in Antigua. There were just two problems. First, we had to be at the restaurant in about 30 minutes. Second, it was about a 10 minute drive from where we were staying, it was pouring rain, and we had no ride. I quickly called my great friend Clay and asked if he could give us a ride and he agreed to pick us up in 20 minutes. I woke Emma up and we rushed to get ready once we were ready Clay rushed us to the restaurant. The restaurant had done an amazing job, there were roses everywhere! Once at the restaurant, I asked the waiter to take a video of us. I was so nervous I got on the wrong knee but quickly switched knees and finally asked Emma to marry me. Emma said yes and we hugged and kissed. To me, it was the perfect proposal because we often find ourselves making plans at the last minute and scrambling to make them happen and during those times Emma and I have had the most memorable and best times of our lives. We live to be spontaneous.
