Question

Where to stay? And tips

Answer

Which town serves as the best base in the region for non-drivers? You can stay anywhere on the Amalfi Coast, however it's more convenient to stay closer to Positano on the day of the wedding. There is a bus service between villages: Amalfi Coast bus times Buses run 7 days a week (all year-round) between the hours of 6:00 am and midnight (depending the location, and one hour to one hour and a half later on weekends). The frequency of the buses depends on the demand for public transport at the time. *We will arrange a return shuttle on the night of the wedding. Amalfi is your most strategic choice as it has direct connections to every point of interest on the coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. Sorrento and Salerno are also great, as they’re major bus, train and ferry hubs. For slightly cheaper digs, consider Sant’Agnello, a village within walking distance of Sorrento; Atrani, a six-minute walk from Amalfi; or Maiori, a village between Amalfi and Vietri sul Mare with good ferry service. **The superstar coastal villages** The towns between Amalfi and Salerno are a breeze to reach by ferry or 5570 SITA bus (barring unforeseen issues). Note that the last ferry from Positano leaves in the late afternoon in the high season. The price of a “mid-range” hotel in Positano would easily be in the luxury category in most other cities in Italy. As a general note, hotels will be less expensive as they get further away from the main beach and town center (read: more stairs). Parking is typically not included and usually costs around 20 euro per night at a nearby garage. While there are certainly deals to be found, expect to spend around 200 euros a night in Positano for accommodation with breakfast included.

Question

How to get there by Ferry/car

Answer

**Naples to Positano Ferry** There is not a direct ferry from Naples to Positano. you have to make a quick stop in Sorrento on the way. The Naples port can get a little hectic. Prices and schedule will vary depending on season expect to pay about 30 euros per person each way. Alilauro is one of the main companies and you can book the ferry ahead of time. You can also purchase tickets right at the ticket booth at the ports. Each ferry will take about 40 minutes. The ferry will eventually dock in Positano right in front of the Hotel Covo dei Saraceni. ** Driving from Naples to Positano** Driving is one of the quickest ways to get to Positano, take you about an hour and a half. Unless you’re on a larger road trip throughout Italy, it’s probably not worth renting a car just to get you to Positano and then have it sit in a pricey parking lot. **Private cars** RESERVE a private driver from the Naples airport to the Amalfi Coast, the most convenient option.

Question

How to get there Bus/Train

Answer

**Naples to Positano by Train (& Bus)** There is not a train station in Positano, but the Circumvesuviana runs from downtown Naples to Sorrento. From Sorrento, you can transfer to the SITA bus directly outside the train station. I always caught the Circumvesuviana at the main Garibaldi stop. You could also always go one stop ahead and catch it at Porta Nolana, where the line begins. The Garibaldi stop is connected to the main Napoli Centrale underground. Go down the stairway in Napoli Centrale and make a left, follow signs for Circumvesuviana. At the end of a long fluorescent tunnel, you’ll see the ticket booth (likely with a line). The train to Sorrento costs about $4 each way. Take the train all the way to the last stop. Do not get off at the second to last stop, Sorrento di Piano (although that’s a quaint little town too). This is the same train that runs by Pompeii, but it’s not just frequented by tourist. The Circumvesuviana is used by locals as well, especially during the summer when Neapolitans visit the beaches along the line. The Circumvesuviana is a little rickety with a classic Naples patina. After about an hour to 90 minutes on the train, you’ll arrive in Sorrento. Head down the stairs to the street level and catch the SITA bus to Positano. That bus can take almost an hour. So, from the Naples train station to Positano can take almost 3 hours depending on traffic, lines and wait times. **How to get to Positano from the Naples Airport** You can reach the Naples port or the main train station from Capodichino airport by taking the Alibus or a taxi right outside the terminal. Alibus tickets can be purchased for 5 euros from the driver.

Question

Transportation Apps

Answer

Make things way easier by downloading the free Unico Campania app, which gives you real-time bus and train data and (if you have a European credit card) lets you buy tickets. Sites like ferryhopper.it or traghettilines.it and their associated apps will get you a roundup of ferry times and tickets, too. If you can’t buy tickets online or via your phone, you’ll have to go old school and buy bus tickets at the newsagents and tobacconists – look for the giant T sign. You can buy ferry tickets at the port.
