Pt. I

How We Met

Hugo and Ami’s story started back in 2017 where they met in college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a small town called Prescott, AZ. They shared a class together and Ami needed some help studying the subject. Bravely, she approached Hugo in the school library where he and a group of friends were studying. (Ami will tell you that Hugo would always look at her wondering how she made it into engineering... Hugo was a great tutor and definitely a huge proponent in her graduating.) From there, they hit it off and quickly became best friends. They always planned their schedules to be the same so they could have every class together. Even outside of school, the two were inseparable. Ami brought Hugo into her granola girl world and taught him to rock climb and Hugo showed her the ropes of lifting in the gym. They shared their love for traveling and had many similarities growing up.

Pt. II

How We Started Dating

It was not until after college, that Hugo and Ami realized they were in love. Ami went off to her first duty station in Utah and Hugo went off to Officer Commissioning School for the Navy. Ami soon wrote Hugo a letter and he immediately contacted her. Their friendship quickly rekindled in November of 2019. Once Hugo commissioned and moved out to San Diego, they started making plans for Ami to visit in April of 2020. But at the start of COVID, their plans were cancelled and they didn’t see each other until September of 2020. Ami flew out to visit Hugo over Labor Day weekend where they shared their feelings for each other. It was scary - starting a relationship long distance. But you never know unless you try, and that’s exactly what they did. Everyday their love grew stronger and deeper for each other. Then their relationship was put through the ultimate test… Hugo was deployed to Japan in June of 2021 and shortly after, Ami deployed to Kuwait in July of 2021. They were across the world from each other and sometimes went days without being able to speak to each other. The occasions that they were able to call on the phone or facetime helped them make it through the hard days. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it doesn’t come without the challenges of being apart.

Pt. III

The Engagement

After 9 long months of being apart, Hugo and Ami were finally reunited. By this point, they knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They planned a long vacation to spend time with each other and their families in Hawaii and Colorado. In Colorado, the two of them shredded some fresh pow in Breckenridge, where Ami taught Hugo how to snowboard (he was a natural and crushed black diamonds by the end). On the last day of their trip, they went on a scenic drive up to Sapphire Point Overlook that had the most amazing view of the frozen lake. Just after sunrise and on the coldest day of their trip (-18°F), Hugo got down on one knee, expressed his profound love for Ami, and asked her to spend the rest of their lives together. (She said yes, of course!!!)
