Things To Do

The beach

The beach

Duh. Sunset is known for its wiiiiide beaches, expansive dunes, and wildlife. Soak it in!

Bird Island Nature Preserve

Bird Island Nature Preserve

The southern portion of the island is known as Bird Island - a rare undeveloped coastal preserve on a barrier island. Its home to stunning white sandy beaches, rolling dunes, salt marsh trails, and lots of bird watching! You can walk there from the beach!

Bird Island Nature Trail Loop

Bird Island Nature Trail Loop

One of the best ways to explore Bird Island! A short loop through the dunes with all the best views of bird island and the intercoastal salt marshes. You start by taking a long stroll down the beach. The nature trail is marked by a wood sign up in the dunes, and the trail is marked with lots of interpretative signs (if you reach the mailbox you've gone too far). Fun fact, there is a birdwatching bench at the end where Ryan proposed to Ansley!

Kindred Spirit Mailbox

Kindred Spirit Mailbox

VF37+VW, Sunset Beach, NC 28468

A local legend! Folks come from all over to leave messages in the kindred spirit mailbox. Take a walk, then take a seat and read notes from other travelers and leave your own in the journals left in the mailbox.

Sunset Beach Pier

Sunset Beach Pier

101 W Main Street, Sunset Beach, NC 28468

For a shorter walk with great views, take a walk out on the Sunset Beach Fishing Pier. You can also grab a quick bite at the grill before heading out!

Local restaurants just over the bridge!

While there aren't any restaurants on the island, there are a few local spots just over the bridge - House's Bar & Grill, Maverick's, and Oak & Palm. Check them out!

For all the days along the way
