How It All Began

10.11.12

Amelia and Christopher first met in the Fall of 2012. Even then, they knew there was something special about each other. When they finally decided to moved in together a year later, they both knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They not only fell in love, but became each other's best friend. Together they decided, before they got married, that they wanted to further their education. They went back to purse their graduate degrees. Christopher is finishing is Master's in Special Education at CCSU and is working as a Special Education Teacher. Amelia graduated from the UCONN School of Social Work in May of 2018 and is working as a School Social Worker. They made the decision that after they accomplished those goals, they would officially tie the knot! Just a few weeks before her graduation, Christopher officially asked Amelia to be his wife!

The Proposal

When five years turns into forever

On the eve of their 5th Annual "Cabin Weekend", a long weekend surrounded by beloved friends in Vermont, Chris came home to Amelia cleaning and packing. He thought he wanted to propose over the weekend. However, when he walked in the door, he knew that was the perfect moment. He asked her to marry him in their new home, in the kitchen, just the two of them. It WAS perfect and she said yes, duh!

The Mansion

Eolia Mansion at Harkness State Park

Amelia and Christopher fell in love with Eolia Mansion the moment they laid eyes on it. The mansion is set back in a lush, green Connecticut state park, right on the Long Island Sound, similar to where Amelia grew up. The mansion, ‘Eolia’ named for the island home of the Greek god of winds, was built in 1906 and purchased by Edward and Mary Harkness in 1907. The 200+ acres were a working farm and the Mansion was the Harkness’ summer home. They did not host lavish parties, but welcomed close friends for intimate visits. Some of these guests were some of the most influential people of their time- the J.P. Morgans, J. D. Rockefellers, and Lord McMillan to give a few examples. In 1920, Mary had apportioned part of property to establish Camp Harkness, a place for learning, medical support and recreational enjoyment for children afflicted with polio. Today, the camp is run by the CT Department of Developmental Services, and is one of the few state parks in the entire country dedicated for exclusive use by citizens with disabilities, accompanied by their family and friends. This was a fact that truly resonated with the couple, a social worker and special education teacher.
