Amelia and Skyler were both in marching band at Plano Senior High School, Amelia as a member of the colorguard and Skyler played mellophone. A friend introduced the two of them during their summer band camp. But what really solidified their friendship was their American Studies class, where they were paired in the same group for the year. Their first assignment was to name their group of eight classmates, so of course Skyler came up with Octopus. The name stuck and throughout their junior year, Amelia and Skyler were joined at the hip.
Amelia and Skyler had been together for five years when they moved to Washington in August of 2020. As they were coming up on their two year anniversary in their new home, they were ready to move on to the next stage of their relationship. Skyler bought the ring and gave it to friends to hold on so Amelia wouldn't accidentally find it in their house. Fast forward two months, before Skyler and Amelia were leaving to fly to Scotland for a friend's wedding, Skyler planned for their close friends to go out to dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Up to this point, Amelia had no idea what was going on. Until they were driving to the restaurant and heard from their friends that there was a two hour wait for a table. Since the restaurant just so happened to be next to the Washington Arboretum, they suggested we walk around while we waited. Amelia knew that there was no way they wouldn't have made a reservation for dinner, so she knew something was up. Not long into walking around the arboretum, Skyler dropped down on one knee and in front of their friends (and additional friends hiding in the bushes) asked Amelia to marry him! She may have gotten distracted by the ring spinning in the box, but she said yes!
