How we met

Food is love

On Father’s Day 2014, Mack and Amber both were attending Emmanuel Baptist Church. Amber had been a member of EBC since she was a child. Mack was a part of the college ministry from Hampton University. After service during the customary Father’s Day cookout, Amber decided to sit in front of Mack and make a new friend. Mack was more interested in the food at first; however, he eventually began to converse with Amber about food of course. Mid conversation, Mack tried Amber's mother’s pound cake for the 1st time. Mack loved the cake, so Amber offered to get her mom to make him one. When Amber’s mom, Carol, walked by, Amber put Mack on the spot and asked her mom to make him a cake. She promised a cake in two years as she walked away to someone calling her. Amber decided to reveal that she knew how to make the cake and would make him one sooner than the two year window her mother gave. After a few weeks, Amber finally made the cake, and Mack offered dinner in addition to the cake. Amber wasn’t expecting much, but after several great conversations about everything from Lil' Boosie to education and IEPs, Amber and Mack hit it off. Hours went by as they conversed about their likes and goals, and this began their beautiful friendship.

The Proposal

November 22, 2018

I had my proposal to Amber planned out since May 2018. As soon as I received her father’s blessing, I put everything in motion. Since I had never done this before, I wanted to make sure everything was perfect. First, I enlisted the assistance of some of Amber’s closest friends: Corenda, Alicia, Toshia, Madison, and Marlana. They each helped me to determine what Amber’s ring size was and what type of ring she liked while still being discreet. For this, I’m eternally grateful to them. These conversations were followed by an impromptu trip to the ring store with Amber in September 2018. We went to Town Jewelers in Fayetteville, Georgia. As soon as Amber picked out a ring, I knew it was time to sell one of my kidneys lol. Now for the actual proposal. This took place Thanksgiving Day 2018. We had just bought our house in June 2018, so this was our first Thanksgiving at the house. Both of our families came, so it was perfect. I waited until after dinner to propose and had my brother, Thomas, record it. I got on one knee, said my little spiel, and Amber said YES. I then did a little freestyle poem to cement the occasion. It was a wonderful moment, even if my brother recorded the video upside down lol.
