Long before there were passports or diplomas, there was just the comfort of knowing each other. Growing up in Kent City meant sharing a foundational backdrop—the same changing seasons, local landmarks, and high school traditions. In high school, our friendship was easy and uncomplicated. We were a safe harbor for each other, the kind of friends who truly saw one another before the rest of the world told us who to be. We built a bridge of trust back then, never realizing that decades later, we would be walking across it. When graduation came, we chose entirely different ways of experiencing youth. Amber submerged herself in the world of ideas, late-night study sessions, and the rigorous pursuit of knowledge. She graduated from GVSU in 2010 with a B.S. in Radiological & Imaging Science and later her M.B.A. in Healthcare Administration. John became a student of the open road. He traded the classroom for train stations, foreign street food, and the profound perspective that only comes from being entirely lost in a place where no one knows your name. He later came back to Michigan and has two beautiful children; Luella and Thunder. We were independently becoming the exact people capable of loving each other fully twenty years later. Twenty years is a long time to carry a memory. Walking into the high school reunion, there’s always a mix of curiosity and nerves. You expect to talk about old teachers, laugh at bad fashion choices from the past, and exchange polite updates on your career. You don’t expect to find the rest of your life. When we finally stood face-to-face, the noise of the crowded room just... faded. Our story reminds everyone that true love doesn't always follow a straight line. Sometimes, it requires you to go out into the world, live a whole lifetime, make mistakes, achieve dreams, and grow up, so that when you finally collide, the fit is absolutely flawless. John brought the world back to Amber. Amber gave John a place to finally land. And it all started in a preschool sandbox.
