On March 15, 2018, Frank and Amber met at the Annual McNair Scholars Conference at the University of Maryland, where they both traveled to present their research. On opening night, they met at a student mixer at the campus bowling alley. The crowd of approx 150 slowly dwindled as people left in groups, leaving Amber to choose the open lane next to Frank. She noticed him right away as she sat awaiting her next turn. Frank sat next to her. They casually exchanged words throughout the game. Amber gave Frank one of her business cards. So began a friendship that would later blossom into something more. After the conference, Amber and Frank stayed in contact every day, despite living in Des Plaines, IL and Rochester, NY. They video-chatted and texted frequently as they became best friends. Later that year, the pair decided to try a long-distance relationship. They made plans to visit each other to meet their family and friends every few months, in Chicago, Nashville, and DC. Amber and her then 4-year old son, Legend, moved to Nashville for a graduate program at Vanderbilt University. Frank was finishing his last year of undergrad at the University of Rochester. As he prepared to attend grad school, his constant prayer was for God to make His Will perfectly clear by closing every door that wasn't for Frank, and only presenting the opened door that was purposed for him. Frank graduated in May 2019, after applying to several grad schools, with no positive responses. In June, he still awaited the last response, from The Bridge program at Fisk-Vanderbilt. As he nervously pondered his remaining options, the letter of acceptance arrived. It was the only graduate program where he received a positive response. In August, Frank moved to Nashville! After a year and 5 months, he was finally near the love of his life. Living in the same city, and attending the same school as her. It was exactly what they both had been praying for.
