How We Met

Fall 2014

Amanda and Tozzi met Amanda's very first day of band camp her freshman year at UGA. For Amanda, it was a new section, new place, and new people, while for Tozzi it was his victory lap as a 5th year senior. The two didn't spend much time together outside of Redcoats at first. There was a group of sousaphones who would always eat dinner together, and Amanda joined them. Tozzi was the 'leader' of the group, who decided where to eat each night. Then that same group began to work out together, and Amanda was invited to watch Thursday Night Football with some of the sousaphones.

Our First Date

Later that Fall

We began dating in September, but with a full class schedule and Redcoat practice, we couldn't find any time to go out on a real date. Finally, there was an away game that Tozzi wasn't traveling to, and he asked me to go out to dinner. We went to Cali N Tito's on Lumpkin Street. The plantains were good and the sandwiches were messy. He used so many napkins!

How He Proposed

October 2017

It was Amanda's senior year, and her final season with the Redcoat Band. The team was doing very well. For Homecoming, there is always an alumni band of former Redcoats, numbering between 300 and 400 every year that performs pregame. That year, Tozzi was planning to do alumni band, so Amanda accompanied him to alumni practice the morning of Homecoming. If you have never seen the pregame show, at the end, the band forms a tunnel and the football team runs through as the band plays Glory. It is tradition at the end of alumni practice, that those Redcoats who are helping out run through the tunnel. During practice, one of the sousaphone TA's ensured that Amanda was planning to run through the tunnel. She thought nothing of it, of course she would. As the band members lined up to run through the tunnel, a few of Amanda's section mates stood in front of her, so she couldn't see. She thought nothing of it. The tunnel forms, and the band plays Krypton. Then Glory. The band members begin to run through the tunnel, and Amanda is pushed to the side, almost running over Tozzi, who is on one knee in the middle of the tunnel. "Amanda Ruth Johnson, Will you marry me?" The band continues to play Glory as people cheer.
