Local towns to explore
Point Reyes Station Nearby with restaurants, shops and also the closest grocery store and gas station from the wedding venue. Bolinas At the southern end of Point Reyes, it's a cute town with art galleries and other shops. This is a great place to see seals and bird watch! There's also Stinson Beach along the Bolinas Bay.
Easy Hikes - suitable for kiddos
Kehoe Beach 1 - 3 miles I love this sandy trail for the wildflowers and birds all around and sometimes you’ll catch rabbits sunning themselves on the trail. You end up at a beautiful beach for hanging out or more hiking. Abbott's Lagoon 2.4 - 6 miles Walk by cow pastures along this easy trail with the lagoon on your right. You end up at sand dunes before moving on to another lagoon and out to the ocean if you want. I’ve seen so much wildlife on this trail! Coyotes, ground squirrels, a bright blue snake once and so many birds. This is one of my favorite trails! Chimney Rock 1.4 miles This is a great way to take a short hike up high with the sea on both sides of the trail. The wildflowers should be out in full force at this time of year and you can see elephant seals below most days.
Moderate Hikes
Laguna Loop – 5 miles, 450 elevation gain Start at the Laguna trailhead and take the coast trail to the coast. I've seen whales from this beach! Continue on and transfer to the Fire Lane trail and then finish the loop with the Laguna trail. I saw a bobcat on Laguna trail! You get the coast and shade of the trees on this hike. Bolinas Lagoon – 3 miles round trip, 800 elevation gain Such a bird watching experience and the egrets will be nesting at this time. But it will be BUSY. Park at Audubon Canyon Ranch, take the Kent trail to Henderson Overlook, continue on the Griffin Loop Trail and finish with Zumie Loop trail. Nesting birds and fern-filled Redwood forest!
Difficult hikes
Both not really strenuous, just listed as difficult for length! Tomales Point Trail: 9.4 miles You go through some beautiful terrain here and end up at the very tip of Point Reyes overlooking the ocean in all of its glory. This trail is more exposed so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and water. When you arrive at the parking lot look into the hills for the herd of Tule Elk that calls this area home. Alamere Falls – 8.4 miles Start at the Palomarin trailhead on the Coast Trail. Go past Bass Lake (2.6 miles in) which is great to swim in! There’s a rope swing and usually floaties left in the lake. You just have to find the path for the entrance because there’s thick vegetation - left about 100 yards more. Move on to get to Alamere Falls which is a spectacular falls to the beach below!
Famous Nature
This is a famous place to see old growth Redwoods. It's a small area where you walk through the trees. I haven't been here since they changed protocol - you can't park there anymore, you have to arrange to be picked up at a shuttle stop. Very beautiful, easy boardwalk through the site. With the busy atmosphere and small area of the site, you probably won't stay more than an hour. Here's the website if you want to brave the madness of visiting: https://www.nps.gov/muwo/index.htm
Another beautiful place!
Another beautiful area with many degrees of hiking, including a very flat and easy hike at the top of the mountain - it's only 2500 feet, so more like a big hill :) - that offers lovely views of the Bay Area. https://www.stateparks.com/mount_tamalpais_state_park_in_california.html
