Climb in the Gunks: The Shawangunk Ridge, aka the Gunks, is a collection of quartz conglomerate cliffs inside the Mohonk Preserve ($20 entry fee) in the Catskills Mountains that offer some of the best trad climbing in the country, with hundreds of high-quality routes. September and October, thanks to the cooler weather, is great climbing season and Shawangunks are ablaze with color.
