Chandler and Amanda went to the same middle school in San Diego, California, and their families had been acquaintances for some years before then. They were friends at the time, but lost contact shortly after Chandler left to attend a different high school. In early 2015, when both were working for the Poway Unified School District, they were assigned to the same group during a work event. Chandler mumbled a line from their favorite podcast, and Amanda was sold. She spent six months hanging out with Chandler in the hope that he would fall in love. In June of that year, Chandler finally asked Amanda what he should introduce himself as at her brother's wedding later in the summer. She understood what he was getting at, and they made it official. Amanda and Chandler started dating just before Chandler moved an hour away to finish his undergraduate studies at UC Riverside that fall. They spent the next three years "long distance," taking turns driving the short hour from Riverside to San Diego or from San Diego to Riverside to spend weekends together. Just before graduating, Chandler was accepted into the PhD program in economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. They spent the next five years in the DC area, where Amanda finished her undergraduate studies and Chandler worked on finishing up his PhD.
