Amanda's favorite, and New Ulm's most popular, tourist stop. Schells is the 2nd oldest family owned brewery in the country. The gardens are beautiful, but the beer is better. Stop in for a brewery tour and don't forget to hit the fun gift shop. Keep an eye out for the peacocks that roam the grounds.
Located downtown, the 45-foot tall Glockenspiel’s bells can be heard chiming throughout the day and playing programmed pieces at noon, 3 PM. and 5 PM. The Glockenspiel houses 37 bells with a total weight of more than two tons. Twelve figurines depicting characters from the city’s history, rotate on a circulating stage during performances. From Thanksgiving to early January, the figurines of a three-piece polka band that stand directly below one of the clock faces are replaced with a nativity scene. It is one of the few free-standing carillons of its size in the world.
The state's only underground winery has plenty of fun "above ground." Located a few miles out of town, it's worth the drive on Friday nights for live jazz and classical music, wood fired pizzas and flatbreads, and obviously wine by the glass!
Almost every trip to New Ulm includes a stop at Happy Joe's for their "Smorgasboard" lunch 7 days a week from 11:00am - 1:30pm. Check out the Taco Pizza (Amanda) or the Broasted Chicken (Carlos). Also WCCO's "Viewer's Choice Best Hotdish" is found at Happy Joe's in New Ulm.
Another of New Ulm's favorite food establishments. Best known for the ribs, you can also get German food at Kaiserhoff. Amanda's favorites are the Sauerkraut Balls for an appetizer and the "Special" of a Small portion of the ribs, with Ray's Salad and a Breadstick (which comes fried). How can you not like fried breadsticks?
This 102-foot monument towering over New Ulm depicts Hermann the Cheruscan, the ancient hero whose army liberated Germany from Roman rule in 9 A.D. Visitors may climb a staircase to the statue for a stunning, panoramic view of New Ulm and the river valley, and tour the Interpretive Center in the base of the monument which is sponsored by the Hermann Monument Society. Many Furth family reunions have been held at the park at the base of the monument. The first time Amanda went to climb the monument, her brother threw up in the enclosed level with viewing windows. Hours: 10AM-7PM Open Saturdays and Sundays, $2.75 per person
This all-sour brewing facility is an off-shoot of Schells Brewery. From the outside, it looks like a non-descript industrial building. Inside, it's full of cool old reclaimed wood barrels and delicious sour beers. The taproom often has live music.
Ridiculously good steak. What else do you need to know? It is THE location for Furth family celebrations.
