Like the model millennials they are, Amanda and Briar met on a dating app in the fall of 2019. Briar took the plunge by sending the first message and quickly asked Amanda to go on a date. At the time, Amanda was supporting families as a doula and was on call for an imminent labor. When the day of their first date arrived (lucky Friday the 13th!), cramping for her client did too. Doula backpack in tow she headed into the city, very willing to take the risk to meet Briar. Amanda took the C train northbound, while Briar rode the same line downtown. Briar had scoped out the best booth by the time Amanda arrived at Art Bar. She headed to the bar to order drinks and stole a quick moment to text a friend, already quite smitten by her first impression. They chatted for hours and hours before walking back to the 14th Street station and heading their separate ways. Not one for playing it cool, Amanda texted Briar early the next morning: “So, when can I see you again?”. “Like… soon,” they replied. Not separated for long, they went on two more dates over the next week. Exactly six months later, on March 13, 2020, Briar headed to Brooklyn to stay with Amanda “for two weeks” - and never left.
