Ellie and I met on a service trip in Mexico City in 2019, bonding during the traffic-filled bus rides and soccer games with the kids. My first impressions of her were her palpable joy, big smile, and her genuine desire to serve others—something she lives out every day through her heart for people in medicine. When the trip ended, our older trip leader suggested the group stay in touch the way all young people do: via email. Taking his advice to heart, we kept in touch by emailing every single day for months. Though it started as a joke, those emails helped us get to know each other quickly, build trust, and lay the foundation of something special. Our first official date was at Chela’s and Sweetwaters in Ann Arbor, where Ellie managed to run into three people she knew from her summer physics class. It became one of our first inside jokes: whenever we bump into someone Ellie knows (which is almost every time we go out), I joke that they must be from her physics class. Over the past six years, we’ve made too many beautiful memories to count: from Zoom calls with Ellie and Bridget during the pandemic, visiting my Abuelos together in Spain, watching the Benedetto and Quinn kids grow up, to endless coffee runs in Ann Arbor (and now actual runs Ellie convinces me to do). I may have driven from East Lansing and back hundreds of times, but every mile brought us closer, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Our shared faith, love of service, desire to improve the world around us, and dream of building a family have brought us closer with each passing year. As a Hispanic and a Michigander, we’ve learned from each other: me learning the art of being on time, and Ellie learning to stop and smell the cafecito. We couldn’t be more excited to begin this next chapter, build our life together, and walk towards Heaven hand in hand. We’re so grateful for all the people who have been part of our journey and helped shape us into the people we are today. We love all of you so much and can’t wait to celebrate with you!
