How We Met-Her Side

5.13.18

We met Summer 2018 while working at camp (Sky Ranch) as counselors for high school students. I knew from the moment I met Caleb that we would be friends. He was this blonde haired blue eyed hilarious guy who knew Japanese and all of the words to "Big Time Rush" and was never afraid to be himself. Caleb was someone who I just loved to watch live his life because he marched to the beat of his own drum. Camp is a cool place to get to watch someone love Jesus and love others really well! Very quickly I learned that Caleb is passionate, puts 110% into everything he does, is a great teacher and an incredible friend, fights for righteousness, is always down to learn new dance moves, looks like and can impersonate Draco Malfoy, and most importantly loves the Lord so fiercely and has a yearning for others to know Him as well. We became good friends just like I knew we would. During one week of camp we even convinced our campers that we were cousins! That backfired haha. At some point during the summer I developed a crush on him. Little did I know, he was feeling the same. Two days after camp ended, I was back in Colorado to begin my Fellowship year at camp, and he'd just toured Denver Seminary. We were both conveniently in Colorado Springs on the same day, so we made plans to grab some lunch at a Thai restaurant that our team discovered during summer. It was at that lunch when Caleb asked me on a date. Now by the nature of what our lives were moving toward, me living in Colorado for a year, him starting his senior year at Texas A&M, we couldn't go on said date until the end of September (which is when he asked me to be his girlfriend.) That was a foreshadowing of our entire relationship. We saw each other about once a month and Facetimed almost every day in between. I knew very quickly into dating Caleb that he was someone I could see myself marrying. He cared for and pursued me from 844 miles away. By month 3 of our relationship I knew he was the one!

How We Met-His Side

5. 13. 18

I thought I had seen it all before and I wasn't having it! Summer 2018 was my third Summer employed at Sky Ranch and I was resolved to have another "relationship free" year. I had witnessed far too often how majorly distracting being overly interested in someone during camp could be. But, this time was different. I think Alyssa was convinced that we were going be good friends before I was. At first, I was mostly trying to avoid getting close with the girls at camp because I was terrified of the distraction of attraction. Then little by little Alyssa kept doing things that showed me that wasn't something to be afraid of. In fact, my friendship with Alyssa added to that Summer instead of taking away as I feared. The way she cared for campers and loved God challenged me to do do the same. Everyday I witnessed Alyssa's unbelievable kindness, compassion, and love for people and our God. Specifically, it was her deep desire for all people to be treated with the dignity worthy of one made in the Image of God and her steadfast trust in the LORD to go wherever He called her that first attracted me to her. It helped that I liked being silly with her too :) For the record, even though Alyssa knew we would be friends first, I was probably the first to know that I absolutely did NOT want to stay just friends. So, it was certainly no coincidence that my visit to Denver after camp was conveniently extended just long enough to ask out Alyssa before she started her new job! From there, texts, FaceTime, snail mail, smoke signals, etc. were the name of the game, barring the occasional visit. But Alyssa has continually proved to be someone I never grow tired of talking to and that's made the long distance thing a whole lot easier. Ultimately, I found that the more I got to know Alyssa the more I began to live like Jesus. It was obvious what to do next. Alyssa is my best friend and the woman I want to spend the rest of my life loving and pursuing Jesus with; I want to marry her!

The Proposal

9.29.19

Caleb was in Mississippi visiting for the weekend. Long distance relationship, remember? He flew in on Friday night and would be leaving Monday morning, so we tried to pack in as many fun things/dates as we could while he was here. He had a really awesome date planned for Sunday after church because that day would be our 1 year anniversary of dating. After church we made a quick trip to Walmart per my request, and as we were walking back to the car Caleb says, "Alright. Give me the keys." I immediately knew something was up because he never drives my car. I give him and keys and hop into the passenger's seat. He hands me a journal full of "remember when..." stories about our relationship with one letter in each story written in red. The last page of the series of letters had a bunch of blank spaces drawn out where each line represented a letter, kind of like hangman. After filling in all of the spaces with the red letters that were on each page, the puzzle spelled out "It is happening and I love you!" So from that point on I knew he was going to propose. He drove us to Le Fleur's State Park in Jackson. He parked and walked me down a trail of the park. We rounded a corner and were immediately greeted by a trail of white rose petals that led to a stunning scene of sunflowers surrounding a black iron chair. Caleb sat me down and read a beautiful poem he wrote, he then proceeded to take off my shoes and humbly wash my feet. He stood me up while he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him! There was a photographer taking photos the entire time as well, so we will always have to photos to remember that special, life-changing day!
