The haldi ceremony is a pre-wedding ritual in Sikh weddings that involves applying turmeric paste to the bride and groom. What happens during the ceremony? • Everyone applies haldi paste to their foreheads and bless the couple for a happy marriage. • The bride and groom are covered in haldi paste to give them a glow. Why is the ceremony performed? •Turmeric is believed to have purifying and beautifying properties.

The word Jaago means ‘wake up’ in Punjabi and it is a night of celebration by both the families when they come together. Traditionally, Punjabi families held Jaago ceremonies to spread the news of a wedding by the use of colorful pots lit by candles on their head dancing and singing to the loudest extent.

The Wedding Ceremony is centered around the Guru Granth Sahib (Holy Book). • The couple and their respective parents stand to offer Ardaas to ‘Waheguru’, followed by singing of Shabads. The Priest tells the couple about the importance of the marriage and their union their responsibilities to each other the general idea of leading a spiritual life according to Sikh beliefs. • The Priest conducting the marriage performs The Four Lavan (verse) from The Guru Granth Sahib.
