How it All Began for Alton & Pamela

Sunday Morning Surprise

It all started one Sunday at church — not the most surprising place for a minister and a greeter to cross paths, but the story that followed certainly was! Pam was faithfully serving in the greeters’ ministry, holding the door open with her usual warm smile. Reverend Wilson is one of the associate ministers, and as fate (or divine timing) would have it, he walked right past the door she was holding — only to realize a moment later that she had been holding it for him. He circled back, sheepishly saying, “Oh, you were holding that door open for me!” Pam simply smiled and said, “Oh, no problem,” and that was that… or so she thought. For the next few weeks, they’d see each other in passing at church — usually with Pam darting toward the parking lot after service. Then came New Year’s Eve. Reverend Wilson spotted her at Watch Night service and decided it was time to make his move. The next morning, on New Year’s Day, he bravely approached her before service and said, “I’d like to see you after service.” Pam, caught off guard, replied, “Who, me?” After church, Pam was halfway to her car when her friend reminded her, “You know Reverend Wilson said he wanted to see you.” Reluctantly, she turned back — only for him to confess, “I have a confession to make… I don’t know your name.” Pam thought, Now how are you going to ask someone out without even knowing their name? (a question that still makes them both laugh today). Once introductions were made, Reverend Wilson asked Pam if she knew his story. She replied that she did and offered her condolences. He exclaimed that this was a “new year and a new beginning.” He then asked if she’d be interested in having dinner sometime. Pam wasn’t sure what to make of it but decided to take his number. Later that week, curiosity won, and she called him to see if the invitation still stood. Not only did it stand — it was set for the very next day! They met at Red Lobster and talked for hours, laughing and discovering how naturally they connected. One dinner led to another, and before long, Reverend Wilson was buying concert tickets months in advance for a show that November. What started with a missed doorway turned into a doorway to something much greater. Together, they’ve found joy, laughter, and love — and Pam happily admits he’s helped her loosen up a little, while he insists she keeps him grounded. It’s true what they say: sometimes love finds you when you least expect it — even on a Sunday morning at church.
