This is the story of two first-gen Caribbean-American kids—Alounso from Miami and Courtney from Brooklyn—who crossed paths in the most unexpected place: Lansing, Michigan. Both were graduate students at Michigan State University when Alounso first noticed Courtney at a friend’s birthday party, though he did not think to approach her. It took a whole year for them to see each other again at a Black Graduate Student event, where Alounso worked up the nerve to start a conversation this time. Though awkward, the chat left an impression on Courtney. As Courtney joined the group’s leadership, their connection grew through carpool rides, texts, coffee dates, and dinners, all while sidestepping labels. One night, amidst a crowded restaurant, Alounso and Courtney shared a table with another couple. Their overly friendly dinner companion couldn't resist asking, "So, is this a date or something?" Courtney inquisitively looked at Alounso, who, attempting nonchalance, fumbled through a response. The evening continued at another restaurant for dessert, where they shared one of Alounso's favorite treats. The “date” question lingered until, a week later, Alounso nervously texted Courtney, “Can I take you on a real date?” She said yes. Their first official date unfolded at Lansing's Creole Bar, where they savored the city's attempt at New Orleans cuisine. The evening continued with live music at Urban Beat, and just like that, the enchanting connection was kindled. Dates evolved into kisses, kisses unfolded into spending more time together, and before they knew it, they were embarking on trips, meeting the families, aiding each other in moves, weathering a global pandemic, and through it all, their love burgeoned. After Alounso graduated and moved to Tallahassee for work, Courtney moved to join him. Wanting to solidify their commitment Alounso organized a surprise proposal with some special guests at Tallahassee's Savor restaurant, nestled in the embrace of a water fountain and willow trees. Alounso, dropping to one knee, popped the question, leaving Courtney initially shocked, then tearful and joyous as she accepted. As they entered the restaurant, another surprise awaited Courtney – several members of her and Alounso's family were all there, ready to share in the joy of the occasion. Courtney cried at the sight of her unexpected guests, overwhelmed with joy at the unexpected family reunion.
