Conceived by the publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst and his architect Julia Morgan, Hearst Castle is pretty much a must-see on the central coast if you have the time for a one hour drive north to San Simeon - the art, architecture and setting are unparalleled. A trolley will take you from the visitor center just off Highway 1 high up into the coastal range where the estate is perched. You might spot some of the herd of wild zebra that graze on the hillsides - descendants from Hearst's once robust menagerie! For first-time visitors, we recommend booking the Grand Rooms tour. And if you miss the zebras, don't fret - there is more wildlife to be sighted 5 miles up the coast at the Elephant Seal Vista Point. The gentle sea giants hang out on this swath of beach in droves year round.
This extensive stretch of sand and its surrounding cute beach town just south of San Luis Obispo are the idyllic California postcard of your dreams come to life. Along the shoreline you'll find tons of Pismo clams and a stroll down the recently renovated pier will reward you with breathtaking views of the ocean and coastline - as well as almost certain dolphin and highly likely humpback whale sightings. If you're keen to rent kayaks, paddle boards, or have a surfing lesson, this is the prime spot. You might even run into Dana McGregor, a Pismo Beach local famous for his surfing goats! Connecting the pier to the mainland, Pomeroy Avenue has many kitschy souvenir shops, old school seafood joints, a pool hall and a bowling alley. We recommend the Cool Cat Café for burgers and root beer floats.
Just north of San Luis Obispo, you'll find picturesque Morro Bay. The centerpiece of this coastal haven, Morro Rock, looms out of the ocean to majestically greet you. This volcanic monolith has guided generations of fishermen home, their holds brimming with the freshest California catch. It also serves as the guardian of fresh oyster beds, and the home of seals, sea lions and sea birds. And otters. If you want the express joy of observing many sea otters up close and personal, head to the waters directly surrounding Morro Rock. The adjacent town is quaint and quintessentially central coast. If you do nothing else, visit the Shell Shop - they 'excel in shells' (!!) - and take home some real treasures big or small from the oceans of the world. You can also get a very nice bowl of clam chowder from basically any dining establishment in town. We recommend those that offer a bay (sea otter) view!
Arguably the most picturesque little tucked away beach on the whole of the California coast. Go for the scenic drive through the canyon leading to the beach, snaking around the lovely Avila Beach Golf Resort course (golfers, take note!) and farmers' stands (if strawberries are on offer, stop and fork over every cent in the glovebox...you're welcome), then behold the super cute Avila cove when you wind around and hit the Pacific. Sea otters and seals will likely greet you around the rocky bits of coastline and breakwaters. At low tide, you can venture around the northern side of the beach and witness the diverse biological delights of the tide pool ecosystem among the wave-worn rocks. Squadrons of pelicans will salute you left and right as you amble down the short boardwalk, enjoying saltwater taffy and souvenir pressed pennies from the Hula Hut and delicious local coffee from The Kraken.
Population: 18! The itty bitty and oh so quaint town of Harmony was founded in 1869 and at the time was the center of the California dairy industry - renowned for the quality of its milk, buttermilk, butter, and cheese. The town boasted several dairy ranches, with ownership changing frequently based on intense rivalries. In 1907, the various owners finally called a truce and came together under the town’s new name: Harmony. There are just a few buildings in town, but the ambience is super charming. Check out the historic post office and the beautiful Harmony Chapel. Catch a glassblowing demo or shop for unique handmade treasures at Harmony Glassworks. Then if you're so inclined, venture to Harmony Cellars located on a small hill just outside the little town for the spectacular views and sumptuous vintages.
The second cutest inn and dining spot in SLO is certainly worth a visit! Experience a delicious breakfast at Apple Farm Restaurant located on the charming Apple Farm Inn property. The farmhouse-inspired breakfast menu features a variety of delightful dishes made from scratch with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Be sure to try their famous apple fritter pancakes or eggs benedict. The mouth-watering pies are also very much of note.
Hikers and lukewarm trail-walking enthusiasts rejoice! SLO is home to famous and beautiful Bishop's Peak. Climb 1559 feet above sea level to the rocky apex and be rewarded with stunning views of San Luis Obispo and the Los Osos valley below. The unmistakable rock formation is named for its triple peak resembling a bishop's hat. Navigate the switchbacks all the way to the top and you'll have the optional scramble to the rocky peak. You will not only enjoy impressive views, but will feel a singular sense of personal accomplishment almost unrivaled by any other feat. Do not attempt this hike in the dark and especially not in the dark equipped only wearing flip flops as Sarah once did in college...trust.
Save a cowboy. There are ample horseback riding opportunities in the SLO area, we recommend heading straight to the Madonna stables to take advantage of their many acres of horse trails!
