The Proposal

After many months of kindly encouraging Thomas to get “the show on the road,” he managed to pull off the surprise of a lifetime. I’m not easy to surprise, but with the help from our families, he did it. He really pulled it off. The week before the proposal, Thomas told me that we were going to a friend’s going away party, which was believable. The day of the “party,” aka the proposal on May 31, Thomas was willing to do whatever I wanted to. We woke up, went on a run (he doesn’t usually join me), walked the dogs, and went grocery shopping. When we got back to the house, Thomas cleaned his car and I put the groceries away. We both got ready for the “party,” and if I had had any idea of the proposal, I would have washed my hair instead of using dry shampoo. Anyway, I was a few minutes behind schedule, and Thomas had been patiently waiting - usually it’s the other way around. When we were a few minutes away, Thomas said he forgot the going away gift. I questioned if we really needed to turn around to get it. Thomas assured me that we did. Since I was already in a good mood from Thomas doing everything I wanted to do that morning, I went along with turning around to get this “gift.” Thomas ran inside the house when we got back but quickly came out telling me, “you need to come see this. You won’t believe it.” So I go back in the house, and Thomas said to look out in the corner of our backyard. Not knowing what I was looking for, I turned back towards Thomas. He got down on knee and proposed! I was in shock and thought it was a prank. Of course I said yes and then blacked out. Thomas told me to look downstairs for another surprise. I was thinking maybe it was another dog. Waiting downstairs are our parents and my sisters. Before I knew it, my mom was in tears and hugging me. After hiding out in the nearby Sprouts parking lot, our families snuck in our house with a bunch of food, cake, and drinks to celebrate all the while I thought we were going to a going away party.
