Portugal Travel Tips

🛂: Please check your passport now and ensure it won’t expire on or before your trip, you need at least 6 months of wiggle room! 💶: Most places accept credit cards (not always American Express), however some establishments are cash only. We recommend having some EUROS on hand just in case. 💰: When tipping, 10% or rounding up are seen as the norm when tipping in Portugal. 👠: We do not recommend breaking-in your new shoes in Lisbon! Lisbon has steep inclines and narrowed, cobbled streets - dress comfortably for walking around. 🔌: Don't forget to pack a power plug adapter (or two)! 🇵🇹: English is widely spoken around Lisbon. You will encounter some locals who spoke only Portuguese, so its nice to know a little lingo. We have enjoyed learning some phrases on the Duolingo app (free). - Download google translate before your trip, for some food menus you can fully translate using the camera app on an iPhone (if you have google translate)

If you prefer to rent a car for your trip, It's much cheaper to rent a manual vs automatic car, and can be as cheap as $5 day for local companies. Enterprise rents out of Lisbon Intl Airport, if you want a brand you know. Don't forget to check the parking options and rates where you'll be staying.

Extend Your Adventure

We encourage everyone to extend their trip and take the opportunity to explore other beautiful cities in Portugal or even venture into other parts of Europe. Whether it's the historic streets of Lisbon, the stunning beaches of the Algarve, or the charming towns of the Douro Valley, there's so much to see and experience. Lisboa Santa Apolónia: This is the oldest train station in Lisbon and offers connections to cities like Porto, Coimbra, and Braga. It's also a hub for international trains heading to Spain. Lisboa Oriente: Located in the modern Parque das Nações area, this station is a key hub for high-speed trains (Alfa Pendular) and offers connections to major cities across Portugal, including Porto, Faro, and Coimbra.

Budgeting Your Trip

- For those traveling from the United States, flights to Lisbon can vary depending on the time of year and departure city. On average, round-trip flights can range from $600 to $1,200. We recommend booking early to secure the best prices. - Once in Europe, traveling between cities is quite affordable. Budget airlines often offer flights within Europe for as little as $50 to $150 one-way. Alternatively, trains are a comfortable and scenic option, with fares typically ranging from $20 to $100 depending on the distance and type of service. Whether you choose to fly or take the train, it's easy to explore more of Portugal or venture to other European destinations. - When it comes to accommodation, Portugal offers a wide range of options to suit different budgets. On average: Hotels: Expect to pay around $100 to $200 per night for a mid-range hotel in Lisbon or other major cities. Airbnb: Prices can vary, but you can often find good options between $60 to $150 per night.
