Why would anyone ever ask a mediocre hockey player to sub on their softball team? That's a great question, but one we're glad wasn't asked a while back. Jason, who is not the most coordinated out on the diamond, was asked to sub on a coworker's softball team while working for the Texas Rangers and he decided to step up to the plate, literally. On the other side of this story, after suffering a season-ending injury just prior to the start of softball season, Alex decided to go out to the ball game and support her would-be teammates. Complete with a Detroit Tigers ballcap and knee brace, she took her spot in the dugout for the first time that season. With the nerves of being a fish out of water out on the softball field, Jason now had to compete with the distraction of that pretty girl over in the dugout...yeah, the one in the knee brace. Unfortunately, thinking through all of those thoughts while running the bases was a bit of a distraction, which led to him getting hit square in the back with a poorly-aimed attempt to throw him out at second base. Now, here is where the story differs depending on who is telling it. As he walked off the pain back into the dugout, Alex claims she asked Jason if he was alright as he walked by. But Jason swears he walked by without a word from Alex. To be fair, that entire time he was thinking to himself, "don't cry in front of the pretty girl, don't cry in front of the pretty girl," so it's entirely possible there's a bit of truth to both stories. After a team-earned victory in the game, everyone decided to make their way to a local bar to celebrate, Alex included. After an hour or so, and a beverage or two, passed by nearly everyone decided on a venue change to grab a bite to eat. With their numbers dwindling as the day turned to evening, and the evening into night, an even smaller group made the call to keep the celebration going at a nearby tavern. And as the night grew later and later, Jason and Alex got closer and closer. But that wasn't simply a coincidence. No, Jason had a plan. Do you remember early when I mentioned that Detroit Tigers hat Alex was wearing? Well, Jason got the bright idea to ask if he could try it on, and once he did he claimed it looked much better on him, which means he got to keep wearing it. He did all of this knowing full well that as long as he was wearing her hat, she wasn't going to leave. The craziest thing about this silly little plan of his was that it actually worked. Eventually Alex and Jason were the only two left from the softball group, and after a bit more chatting, and maybe a little flirting, they decided to exchange numbers and see each other again sometime soon. Usually, this is where they say something like, "and the rest is history," but this story didn't quite go like that. Sure, Alex made him work a little extra in the beginning, and Jason took a job that moved him to another state for nearly a year before Alex joined him, but that's not the best fairytale ending for a "How We Met" story. So instead, I'll back you back to that first night after the softball game. We all know Alex was born and raised in Michigan, but what you may not know is Jason's mom is from Michigan as well. So after exchanging numbers and going their separate ways, when Jason got to his car he decided to call his mom and told her, "I met a girl tonight, and she's from Michigan." How's that for a happily ever after?
