How We Met

First comes school, then comes marriage!

Our story began at "school" aka work as a high school girls basketball coach and a high school athletic trainer. Kallie was new to the school and started working as an athletic trainer in October, just a month before the basketball season would begin. Kallie was leading a weight room workout for the girls basketball team and that is when the "master plan" began. The basketball girls immediately began harassing Alex about the new athletic trainer and how cute we would be together. After months and months of harassing, Alex and Kallie decided to give it a shot, but on the down low! Our first date consisted of working out together, grabbing a bite to eat, and then talking in the car for 6 hours! From that day on, we were inseparable! We never wanted to spend a day apart - so we didn't!

The Proposal - Kallie's Version

02.09.2018

Alex and the girls basketball team came up with the master proposal. It was a Saturday morning, and his parents were hosting a basketball brunch for the team. I was told the girls made me a birthday gift, which was two months late, and I had to open it in front of them. I was handed a gift bag with a t-shirt inside. Little did I know, a simple t-shirt would be the beginning of forever. I pulled the t-shirt out of the bag and read "Mrs. Coach"! As my jaw hit the ground and I lowered the t-shirt, Alex was down on one knee with the shiniest ring I had ever seen in my life! My immediate response to him asking me to marry him was "UHHH YEAHHHHHH" in my loudest, shakiest voice.

The Proposal - Alex's Version Part 1

Kallie had no idea what was about to unfold during the team breakfast that morning…Don’t ask me the date, I don’t remember. Kidding? Maybe… Anyways, Kallie is probably the nosiest person in the world so keeping the proposal a secret was like trying to keep a bear from eating meat. But despite her best attempts, I managed to convince her that marriage was scary and that I wasn’t ready (who is?). The team was all present at the Fancher’s house when I finally arrived from the gym that morning (we had just finished practice and it’s hard to face your fears). Immediately the girls looked at me, as if trying to figure out if I was “going to play it cool.” I most certainly did not. I was sweaty and it was showing. Lots of giggling and whispers ensued, but Kallie remained unaware of this bomb I was about to drop on her. Would she say yes? 50/50. I liked those odds. After an awesome breakfast cooked up by Momma Fanch, we made our way into the living room. The girls took charge and informed Kallie that the team had gotten a gift for her. She knew that was coming, but only because I left the gift in the back seat of the car for two months. I left the room to acquire the gift and also dry my sweaty hands. A few deep breaths and I was back in the room. Kallie took the gift and unwrapped it hesitantly. If I had told her it was a bag of her favorite chips, perhaps her hesitance would have been mitigated enough to speed things up…seconds felt like minutes…minutes like hours. I was still so sweaty. After opening the bag, she pulled the shirt out. “Mrs. Coach” was written across the front. She paused…it was possible it did not compute. Or worse, my 50/50 gamble wasn’t paying off…I suddenly realized that I was never very lucky at the slots either. But I made my move nonetheless. I awkwardly walked across the room like a penguin trying to dodge rush hour traffic on the freeway. Can someone turn the heat down?

I then got down on one knee, fumbling for the ring. I didn’t want to drop it but I was prepared for such a dilemma. I managed to pull it out in one clean sweep. I began mumbling my shaky lines… “Kallie Lynn Heiges, the love of my life, will you marry (tolerate) me?” Again, she paused. After a few seconds (possibly hours) she responded, “Ughhhhh, yeaaaa!” I went in to kiss my now fiancé for the first time. She wasn’t having it. Still too surprised. Finally, I managed to steal a kiss…holding back tears along the way. I tend to cry (players can confirm). My fiancé is probably reading this for the first time thinking “Gosh dang’t, can’t he be serious for this? It’s going on a freaking website!” The answer to that would be no Kallie, c’mon now. I of course would prefer not to sleep on the couch tonight, thus, I leave here with this. Kallie Lynn Heiges is the love of my life. To think that a few life choices would have ultimately prevented us from ever meeting each other scares me to death. But here I am today, the luckiest guy in the world, writing about a moment that we will forever cherish together. While certainly one of the happiest days of my life, I can’t help but think (know) that the best days are yet ahead….and that makes me the luckiest guy in the world. I love you Kallie!!!!!
