Our Story

Alex first saw Gianna when he was a first year medical student. She was doing her PhD in Biological Chemistry and was teaching a neuroscience review course that he happened to attend. He was struck by how she carried herself on stage with confidence, humility, and intelligence, and he left that day wondering if he would ever see her again. Two years later, Alex was rotating on neurosurgery as a third year medical student and Gianna was shadowing Dr. Chen. They met for the first time in person in the operating room and there was an instant connection. From there, she helped him get involved in the UCI neurosurgery interest group. They would spend an hour or two talking after interest group meetings, and eventually made time to go on their first real date, a 6am surf session at Huntington Beach, and they didn't even notice the cold. They were fatefully both assigned to the "blue team" on a pediatrics rotation, and within a week Gianna was showing up to Alex's Saturday shifts at the Children's hospital. It became clear there was something between them, and when they met up to study over the weekend, they finally shared their first kiss. What followed was a whirlwind of love, adventure, joy, and facing challenges together. In our first year as a couple, we went on snowboarding trips to Big Bear, Mammoth, and Aspen, and went dancing to Gryffin, Kygo, and Forester at the Palm Tree Crew Music Festival. Gianna faced sub-internships while Alex worked through his intern year at UCI. We ran our first marathon at Huntington Beach. Gianna taught Alex to be brave in the big, cold waves in Malibu and to swim out past the break to the kelp forests. In our second year, we ran on the beach in a hurricane, went to El Salvador to surf beautiful waves, and worked together on the neurosurgery service to learn and take care of our patients. We finished our second marathon together. We traveled to South Africa and went on Safari, and then to Napal to learn from and work with Nepalese neurosurgeons. We presented Gianna's talk together at the Western Neurosurgical Society. Most importantly of all, we realized we were meant to be together for ever. Alex got down on one knee on Broad Beach on a beautiful November day on in Malibu and asked Gianna to be with him forever, and she said YES!
