It may be easier to fly into Logan and take the shuttle bus to Portland. The Concord Coach is an incredible bus line (we take it all the time!) that runs frequent shuttles between Boston and Portland. https://concordcoachlines.com/route/portland-me-to-from-boston-logan-airport/ Once in Portland, you will need to take a taxi or uber from the train station to get a rental car.
Train
The Downeaster is a great option to get from Boston to Portland. If coming from NYC, you will need to plan on taking a taxi or uber across town to transfer train stations. Once in Portland, you will need to take a taxi or uber from the train station to get a rental car.

The Concord Coach is a premier New England bus line - it is a very nice bus with wifi, free snacks, and comfortable seats. They have two buses a day running between New York City and Portland. Note: the bus does not run on Tuesdays. Once in Portland, you will need to take a taxi or uber from the train station to get a rental car.
