On a fateful day in late August 2005, a young Deirdre Clare and a young Alex Hulvey met, in a world history class, at Harrisonburg High School. They sat next to each every day for the rest of the year. Even though there was no romantic relationship planted, there was a mutual admiration for each that bloomed. The world had a plan for them, for their paths would cross many more times in their personal journeys of self discovery. Alex made a move to Richmond in early 2011 and just a few days later Deirdre would spontaneously visit and run into him on Cary St. The spark once agan was lit but the fire simmered for Deirdre returned to Harrisonburg and continued her studies at local community college until she began her work at the Mary Baldwin University. Alex began to feel great nostalgia for the Blue Ridge Mountains and packed up and left Richmond. He would then begin his time with studies at the Blue Ridge Community College and then James Madison University. The Bernie burn caught him in 2015 and he began to volunteer on Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign, ultimately representing the Valley’s Bernie vote in Philadelphia. At the same time, Deirdre’s older brother, Cullen Tiernan, caught the same Bernie fever and was the Bernie Delegate from his district in California.
