Alligator Point is an unincorporated community on St. James Island in Franklin County, Florida. It is located along U.S. 98, south of Bald Point State Park on the Gulf of America and is part of Florida's "Forgotten Coast".
Alligator Harbor is known for its clam and oyster harvesting and was featured on Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs." Alligator Point boasts ancient Native American roots. It later became a frontier fishing spot and a turpentine center with "cat face" trees. During WWII the area was used as a training ground for pilots (including Tuskegee Airmen) who used its dunes for bombing practice. Its beaches were used as a training ground for amphibious landings, with a 50-foot wide channel dredged to transport troops through Alligator Harbor. Residents still occasionally find .50 caliber bullet shells on the beach today.
Alligator Point is largely residential. It offers a peaceful atmosphere with natural spacious beaches. Visitors can enjoy fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and birdwatching. They have many opportunities to spot dolphins, manatees, and various bird species.
