If you've never been - it's worth the trip! A favorite Niagara Falls State Park attraction for more than 150 years, the Maid of the Mist journey begins at the Observation Tower, where guests are given a souvenir rain poncho to wear and board the double-deck Maid of the Mist tour boat. From there, the boat ferries past the base of the American Falls, and onto the basin of Horseshoe Falls--the dramatic passage leading you through the roiling waterfall whitewater and massive rock formations. The Maid of the Mist returns guests to shore with newfound appreciation of the power and grandeur of Niagara Falls.
Eternal Flame Falls, despite being located within the Chestnut Park boundaries, is off on the fringe, away from the crowds, and most directly accessible from a trail that begins on the southern edge of the park. The path leading down to Shale Creek and Eternal Flame Falls snakes through mixed hardwood forest on a sandy glacial terrain, and passes a beautiful Hemlock grove as it winds around to the bottom. The descent can get a bit muddy and filled with obstacles, as erosion has exposed the sandy earth as well as a large quantity of exposed roots. Once at the creek, visitors must walk upstream to get to the falls. A few downed trees can get in the way, and if the falls are flowing, you will most likely get your feet wet.
The Buffalo AKG Art Museum sits at the edge of Frederick Law Olmsted’s Delaware Park (very close to our ceremony site). It is one of the oldest museums dedicated to the art of our time, and the sixth-oldest public art institution in the United States. It was founded in December 1862 as the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy with former President Millard Fillmore among its incorporators.
The Martin House is widely considered one of Wright’s finest Prairie houses – a signature work from the early years of his celebrated career. Wright himself referred to the Martin House as “the opus” and kept the site plan pinned to his drawing table for close to fifty years. Today the Martin House has been completely-restored to its former magnificence in the most ambitious restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright site ever undertaken. Three of the original elements — the pergola, conservatory and carriage house, which were demolished decades ago – are rebuilt in the first-ever reconstruction of Wright buildings.
