From Checkmate to Soulmate:
Once upon a time, lost in the internet void of a Zoom breakout room, two tired teachers’ lives were forever changed.
What began as a professional development session quickly turned into an invitation to “play chess.” Now, I know what you’re thinking - euphemism? Nope. To Alexa’s surprise, when she arrived at the bowling alley for their first date, Victor popped his trunk to reveal 18 chess sets and the promise to play as many games as it took to “checkmate” his future wife.
And it worked! Five years later, those hours of calculated moves became holiday trips to Oregon, hundreds of claw-machine wins, air hockey rankings, a cozy apartment, countless friends, shared grief, stacks of books and cards, an airport proposal, and now… a wedding!
For many, “checkmate” marks the end - but for us, it was only the beginning.
